Happy New Year!!!

Happy New Year!!!

For my New Year's manicure, I decided to do my left hand as 2014 themed, and my right hand as 2015 themed.  My left hand is the five most Googled things of 2014.  My pinkie is Flappy Bird, the 5th most Googled thing.  My ring finger is the logo for Malaysia Airlines.  My middle finger is an Ebola germ (and I thought the placement ended up pretty funny...)  My index finger is the logo for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

My thumb is "Jumanji" because the most Googled thing of 2014 was Robin Williams!  One of my very favorite movies growing up was Jumanji, and according to my mom I watched it "at least 100 times."  Since I didn't feel like doing a portrait of Robin Williams, I decided to make a tribute to Jumanji and Mr. Williams' work.

I wasn't able to get a picture of this one before I wrecked it cooking for my New Year's party, so we'll just pretend it's still pristine!  Before it was ruined there were all 6 dice on it.

I used my right hand to welcome in the new year, and what better way to do that than glitter!

My base is a black holographic polish I mixed and named "Nova."  I used OPI "In True Steffani Fashion" to do a glitter gradient on the tip, and the numbers are done in OPI "Love.Angel.Music.Baby."

I put "Happy New Year" on my thumb this year instead of just exclamation points.  Do you know how much of a pain in the butt it is to paint tiny letters left handed and upside down?  It's a real pain in the butt!

Wherever you are tonight, I hope you have a happy and safe holiday, and a great 2015!!!

Super Skittle Christmas Nail Art

Hey guys!  I'm super excited about this mani, because I went overboard again.  I guess that's what I do when I only get to do one mani a week at most!  Today's theme for "Challenge Your Nail Art" is Freestyle, so I did a different Christmas themed nail art on each of my nails!  The right hand is a little messy, but I hope that can be forgiven haha

Let's get to the nail art!

I'm gonna start with the right hand to get it out of the way haha!  On my thumb I've got some Christmas lights which I did over a black base to make it look like they were shining at night.  On my index finger I've got a penguin, I was gonna give him a little bow tie, but I decided I liked it as it was and didn't want to risk messing it up!  My middle finger is some simple candy cane stripes, and my ring finger is one of those dotted Christmas trees that were all over the nail art world last year.  My pinkie is just a simple wrapped present.

If you want to successfully paint both hands, I highly recommend starting with the right!  Usually I start with the left hand and then don't even want to go on to the right hand cause I know it wont look as good.  If you start there you've got no where to go but up!

And up means my left hand!  Though I'm not super happy with the cabin on my thumb, that's what it is.  There's also an evergreen tree and a Christmas star.  My pointer finger has a Rudolph made following Adventure's in Acetone's tutorial.  My middle finger is a snowman that looks a little lumpy, but that's just snow falling behind him, promise!  My ring finger is Santa, and my pinkie is an elf costume.

Every time I do a fancy nail art like this I remember how much I miss it like crazy!  If only I had more time in my schedule :(

But hey, I managed to get some festive nails on for Christmas!  Make sure to check out what the other ladies came up with for their Christmas manis today!

12 Days of Christmas Nail Art

So here I am, back from yet another long break to bring you guys a nail art for the Challenge Your Nail Art group!  The prompt for today is "Any line from the 12 Days Song."  That's all well and good, but I have finals to study for.  Which of course meant I grabbed a friend and did the entire song!

Whoops!  So here is the nail art, presented to you in song format. (But just the last verse cause aint nobody got time for that)

On the first day of Christmas, my true love sent to me:

12 Drummers Drumming

11 Pipers Piping

10 Lords a Leaping

9 Ladies Dancing

8 Maids a Milking

7 Swans a Swimming

6 Geese a Laying

5 Golden Rings

4 Calling Birds

3 French Hens

2 Turtle Doves

and a Partridge in a Pear Tree

So there it is!  I also have some photos of individual hands to show, and her other toenails which are red green and gold polka dots (and which I'll call the first day of polka dots for the NCC because I don't think I'll get 4 prompts done!)

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Nail Art

College has been kicking my ass hardcore.  This is really the LAST time I should be blogging since it's coming up on finals and there's lots of things due... but I need to destress and MAKE time for me! And that means nail art.  Considering I totally missed two challenges for the NCC (those ladies are so sweet and understanding!) I decided to use my new found mojo on November's challenge: Inspired by a book.

While looking through the album on the facebook group to make sure none of my books had been picked (not so far!) I was shocked to see no one had done The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy!  So I had to snatch that book up right away!

I had forgotten how much I loved nail art!  It's relaxing and pretty and I need to make time for it regularly again (we'll see how that goes in reality).

On the index finger of my mani, we have the famous "DON'T PANIC" from the Guide.  I forgot how unforgiving macro photos are, so you'll have to do the forgiving for my atrocious cuticle upkeep and clean up yourselves :P

On my middle finger we have Marvin the Paranoid Android.  Because what mani is complete without a depressed robot? None.

My ring finger has the best drink in existence, the Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster (complete with olive).  I didn't space this out very well, so let's pretend you can see the bottom of the glass, shall we?

My pinkie has the answer to Life, The Universe, and Everything.  Now if only we knew the question...

And finally, my thumb has the "Don't Panic Guy."  If he has a better name than this, let me know cause I can't remember one for the life of me!

This mani was so much fun, I've missed painting!

CYNA: Pirate Treasure

Hey guys!  I wasn't able to get these up last night because I'm sick (and busy, fun!) and fell asleep by accident.  So today's prompt may be "treasure map," but I'm posting a picture of "treasure" instead.  It's what you find when you follow a treasure map anyway, right?

These were done with several metallic polishes and regular cremes covered with little iridescent glitters to make them look like jewels.

I really liked these, I like how shiny and sparkly the treasure is!

CYNA Pirates- Oceans

Hey guys!  So you may notice I've been super duper MIA lately.  I just started college, and I am so far not very good at managing my time so that I can do anything other than eat, sleep, and homework. But tonight I decided I needed a brain break, so I did some nail art on a friend who lives on my floor! This manicure is for the Challenge Your Nail Art pirate theme!  The prompt for today is "Oceans" so I decided to interpret this as old maps of oceans from back when people thought the world was flat.  It has a compass rose, sea monster (Here be monstes), pirate ship, writing, and part of a continent.

These were a lot of fun to do, but sadly she has to take them off tomorrow morning for work. :(  I did her other hand with a geometric design for the Nail Challenge Collaborative that you should be seeing soon!

I'm gonna leave this post short since I still have 2 papers to write and some reading to do before tomorrow... fun huh?

NCC: Boston Tea Party Nail Art

Hey guys!  Today I have my last post of the month for the Nail Challenge Collaborative, and boy did I just sneak it in on time!

You may have noticed a theme with my entries this month, they started very literal (with a tea set on my nails), moved to a less literal interpretation (blue china print), a creative interpretation (Alice in Wonderland) and now I'm just going totally off the wall, with "The Boston Tea Party" nail art!  Hey, it says "tea party," doesn't it?

These actually ended up being my favorite nails of the entire challenge!  I've been trying to do more scenes that span my nails lately, and I think it's starting to pay off!  I was really proud of these, and super bummed that I worked right after doing them.  They didn't survive.

This is the picture I used for inspiration!

I decided to pretend like there were no visible people on the boat, and that it wasn't so close to shore... I can only do so much, people.  I didn't want them to look crowded either.

And here we have a close up of the thumb, since you cant see it super well in the photo above.

It's just more ships coming in to harbor.  I was really happy with these nails!  I think they conveyed what I wanted them to and I think they spanned across my nails rather well!  I was super sad when they got ruined.

But anyway, make sure you check out the other ladies' final manicures for this very interesting prompt!

Biology Nail Art

Hey guys! Today's post works for two challenges, The Lacquer's Legion "Weird Science" and Freehand Nail Art's "Back to School," since I'm a biology major!  And since I'm a biology major, the second I saw the theme "Weird Science" I knew I'd have to do something with biology... problem was I couldn't decide what.  So I did it all!

I started all my nails with two coats of Sally Hansen White On and then decided on what I would do on each nail.  My thumb has a Punnett Square, index is a part of the Periodic table, middle is a DNA helix (picture I used for inspiration), ring finger is a microscope (picture), and my pinkie is some flowers with "Bio" written over it.  Now on to the explanation behind each nail!

Here we have a Punnett Square.  Punnett Squares are used when you want to know what the outcome will be when you breed two different organisms together.  You have the dominant genes (A and B) and the recessive genes (a and b).  In theory, if parent Aa and Bb had four children, they could be AB, Ab, aB, and ab.  Child AB would display both the A and B traits, child Ab would display trait A, child aB would display trait B, and child ab would display neither traits.   In a square where both parents are Aa or Bb, one child would end up displaying the recessive trait (child aa or bb.)

On the index finger we have a part of the Periodic Table.  Now this is not how I like my Periodic Tables to be honest... I prefer to make my own and add all the info I want to them.  I usually include atomic number and weight, name and symbol, charge and electronegativity, atomic radius, ionic radius, electron affinity, and ionization energy.  I also color code and label around the chart so I know each elements Group Number, the family it belongs to, and for the Noble Gases, the number of electrons it holds.  But there's no way I'm fitting that on a fingernail!  Here we have Carbon, Nitrogen, Silicon, Phosphorous, Germanium, and Arsenic.

My middle finger has a DNA helix.  I've added the key for the colors here, with green being Adenine, purple being Thymine, red being Cytosine, and blue being Guanine.  It doesn't say it in the code, but the yellow (and orange-y parts that were to try to show 3 dimensions...) are the Phosphate backbone.

My ring finger is a microscope.  I don't have much to say about that other than I always have trouble looking past my eyelashes when using one!

And my pinkie is just some pretty flowers with "bio" on it.

So what do you guys think?  Do you like it? Do you like science? I've loved it ever since I was a little kid, it's just so much fun!

NCC: Alice in Wonderland Nail Art

Hey guys! Today I'm posting another mani for the Nail Challenge Collaborative's Tea Party theme.  This time around, I'm taking a bit less literal of an interpretation, and I'm doing the main characters present at the tea party from Alice in Wonderland!

alice in wonderland nail art

I started with two coats of Sally Hansen Pink Coconut since it was a color that wasn't on the outside of any of the characters I was portraying.

This is the picture I used as inspiration!

I decided to portray the March Hare, Mad Hatter, Alice, The Queen of Hearts, and the White Rabbit.  The first thing I did was to block out the shapes of each characters head using Sally Hansen White on White.

Please forgive the messy cuticles, I didn't feel like cleaning up between steps.  Once I had the vague outlines done, I added in some of the basic colors (ones that wouldn't overlap on each other).

After that, I added in secondary and tertiary colors, and then the dark brown, dark gray, or black outlining.  I don't have pictures of these steps because my camera decided to die.

Here's the finished product again! My favorites are definitely the Mad Hatter and White Rabbit.  I do not like my Alice. I tried to be true to the eye shape shown in the picture, and I should have just made them round.  She looks a little possessed.  The top coat also smeared away her chin somehow.

Be sure to check out the other ladies' manicures for mani #3!
